Smyth County Sheriff’s Office Expands Safety Program with Vehicle-Based Enforcement

After achieving significant success with Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) in school zones, the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office is expanding its traffic safety program by adding Vehicle-Based Enforcement (VBE) to address work zone safety.

Since implementing ASE, Smyth County has seen a 95.1% reduction in speeding within school zones, a testament to the effectiveness of consistent, data-driven enforcement.

Building on that success, the Sheriff’s Office is now turning its attention to work zones, where changing conditions and high-speed traffic create increased risks for both drivers and workers.

Vehicle-Based Enforcement (VBE) offers a flexible solution that allows enforcement to be deployed where it is needed most. Unlike fixed infrastructure, VBE can be repositioned to address evolving roadway conditions, making it especially effective in active construction areas.
