SMITHVILLE, TN - The City of Smithville has selected Blue Line Solutions, LLC to install and operate automated speed enforcement (ASE) technology in three local school zones, marking another Tennessee community taking proactive measures to improve traffic safety through data-driven solutions.

Under the new two-year agreement, Blue Line Solutions will install radar feedback signs, flashing warning lights, and LiDAR-based enforcement cameras at Northside Elementary on Highway 56 North, DeKalb County High/Middle School on Highway 70, and DeKalb Christian Academy on Highway 56 South. The systems are expected to be operational before the start of the 2025-2026 school year.

Proven Technology, Data-Driven Results

Like automated license plate readers, Blue Line’s laser-based LiDAR technology provides precise, lane-specific speed measurement and photographic documentation. Only vehicles exceeding the posted school zone speed limit by 11 miles per hour or more will trigger a review. Each violation must then be approved by a POST-certified officer before any citation is issued.

“Every citation is reviewed and approved by the Smithville Police Department to ensure accuracy and fairness,” said Ryan Moore of Blue Line Solutions. “This approach prioritizes transparency, accountability, and the safety of children and families traveling through school zones.”

Zero Cost to the City, Full Transparency to the Public

According to the agreement, Smithville’s only expense will be an initial traffic study-estimated at $15,000-which will be fully reimbursed by Blue Line Solutions. The city will then share revenue from paid citations with Blue Line, creating a self-sustaining program that does not rely on taxpayer funding.

All enforcement operations are limited strictly to active school hours, and citations are considered civil infractions, meaning they carry no points against a driver’s record and have no impact on insurance rates.

Building Safer Roads Through Collaboration

Smithville joins a growing number of Tennessee communities adopting automated speed enforcement to protect students and staff in high-risk traffic areas. Early data from similar programs show reductions of up to 80% in speeding violations within the first 90 days of operation.

“Our goal is to help local agencies reduce speeding in school zones without diverting resources from frontline officers,” said Moore. “Smithville’s leadership is taking a smart, measured step toward a safer community.”
