RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE ANNOUNCES DRAMATIC SUCCESS OF SCHOOL ZONE SPEED CAMERAS

The Rappahannock County Sheriff's Office is proud to announce the outstanding success of the automated speed enforcement program implemented in both public-school zones within the county.

Since the program's launch, speeding incidents have decreased by an impressive 98.7 percent, demonstrating a significant improvement in student safety.

The speed camera program was rolled out through a carefully structured, multi-phase approach:

Phase 1: Pre-Implementation 5-Day Speed Study – Baseline data collection established initial speeding patterns in both school zones.

Phase 2: Public Information & Education (PI&E) – The Sheriff's Office launched a community awareness campaign to inform residents about the upcoming program and the importance of school zone safety.

Phase 3: Warning Phase – Beginning October 20, 2025, a 30-day warning period allowed drivers to adjust their behavior while receiving educational warnings rather than citations. A 5-day speed study conducted during this phase showed early positive results.

Phase 4: Enforcement Phase – Summons enforcement began on November 15, 2025, with another 5-day speed study documenting continued improvement in driver compliance.

Phase 5: Post-Enforcement Speed Study – Final data collection confirmed the program's remarkable success.

Throughout the program, speeding has been defined as any speed exceeding 10 miles per hour over the posted limit in school zones.

Significant Impact on Community Safety

The dramatic 98.7 percent reduction in speeding incidents demonstrates that the program has achieved its primary goal: creating safer environments for students, teachers, and families in and around our schools.

The automated speed enforcement system operates during designated school zone hours, capturing violations and issuing citations to registered vehicle owners when speeds exceed safe limits.

Community Support and Ongoing Commitment

The Sheriff's Office extends its gratitude to the Rappahannock County community for embracing this important safety initiative. The overwhelming reduction in speeding incidents reflects a shared commitment to protecting our most vulnerable road users—our children.

Regular speed studies will be conducted to ensure continued compliance and student safety.
