King William County, VA Measures Strong Early Safety Success with School Zone Automated Speed Enforcement Program

King William County, VA - The King William County Sheriff’s Office and Blue Line Solutions are proud to share early results from the county’s Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) school zone safety program, showing significant reductions in dangerous speeding behavior in a short period of time.

Launched with a warning period beginning August 18, 2025, followed by live enforcement starting September 17, 2025, the program focuses on protecting students, families, and school staff at Hamilton Holmes Middle School and King William County High School.

Early Data Shows Significant Reduction in Dangerous Speeding

Initial speed studies identified a serious safety concern, recording 2,807 speeding violations in just a five-day period, representing nearly 24% of drivers traveling through these school zones.

Updated program data now shows measurable progress toward safer driving behavior:

  • Hamilton Holmes Middle School: 83.7% reduction in speeding
  • King William County High School: 89.3% reduction in speeding
  • Overall County Reduction: 86.8% decrease in speeding incidents

These results reflect the effectiveness of combining public education, a warning period, and fair enforcement to encourage lasting behavior change.

A Community-Focused Approach to Safety

The program was designed to prioritize transparency and education while reinforcing the importance of slowing down where children are present. Cameras operate only on school days, only when students are present, and only when school zone beacons are flashing.

By focusing on drivers traveling more than 10 MPH over the posted limit, the initiative targets the most dangerous speeding behavior while maintaining fairness for motorists.

Why Speed Reduction Matters

Speed remains one of the most significant factors in crash severity. Research shows a child struck by a vehicle traveling 40 MPH has only a 1 in 10 chance of survival, while reducing speed to 20 MPH increases survival rates to 9 in 10.

Programs like King William County’s are designed to prevent tragedies by encouraging safer driving habits where children are most vulnerable.

Commitment to Vision Zero

“We are encouraged by the early results in King William County, which demonstrate how quickly driver behavior can change when communities prioritize safety,” said Mark Hutchinson, Founder and CEO of Blue Line Solutions. “By combining education, transparency, and data-driven enforcement, King William County is making meaningful progress toward safer school zones and advancing the shared goal of Vision Zero.”
