When Dalton Police Department partnered with Blue Line Solutions (BLS) to implement automated speed enforcement in local school zones, their goal was simple: protect students and families by slowing down drivers where it matters most.

Just months later, the results speak for themselves.

Data That Tells a Clear Story

Before enforcement began, a 5-day speed study near Dalton High School and Roan Street School recorded 7,779 speed violations—vehicles traveling 10+ MPH over the posted school zone limit.

After implementing Blue Line Solutions’ automated speed enforcement cameras, a follow-up study recorded just 735 violations in the same 5-day window. That’s a 90.5% reduction in speeding, even though vehicle traffic volumes remained steady.

  • Dalton High School Zone: 5,463 violations reduced to 478
  • Roan Street School Zone: 2,316 violations reduced to 257
  • Total Reduction: 90.5%'

Dalton Police Chief Cliff Cason told the city’s Public Safety Commission,

“We can say with confidence now that this speed enforcement has significantly reduced the number of speeders going 10 or more miles an hour above the posted limit during the school day. That’s the goal—to get speeds closer to the limit, because fatal injuries drop dramatically when speeds go down.”

Safety That Extends Beyond Enforcement Hours

Blue Line’s technology activates only during designated school zone hours, but Dalton’s data shows something remarkable:

Even when cameras were inactive, drivers continued to travel at safer speeds throughout the day.

That behavioral shift underscores the lasting impact of community education, consistent enforcement, and visible safety technology.

“People are still using these roads, but they’re going closer to the intended speed limit,” said Chief Cason. “It’s making a safer corridor for both parents and children walking to school.”

Why Speed Reduction Matters

According to AAA research, the difference between 20 MPH and 40 MPH can be the difference between life and death:

  • A child struck at 40 MPH has just a 10% chance of survival
  • At 20 MPH, that same child has a 90% chance of survival

By reducing excessive speeding, Dalton’s program is directly protecting lives—without penalizing safe drivers or overburdening local law enforcement resources.
